What is HPV?

Answered by Dr. Jennifer Ambur.

HPV or human papillomavirus is a group of viruses that are spread through skin to skin contact, typically through oral, vaginal or anal sex.  HPV is associated with genital warts, precancerous lesions, as well as cancer of the cervix, vagina and vulva in women, penile cancer in men, and anal and throat cancer (head and neck) in men and women.

How does the vaccine work?

Gardasil-9, the latest version of the HPV vaccine, protects against 7 strains (types) of HPV that can cause cancer, as well as 2 strains that cause genital warts.  The vaccine is very safe and effective, preventing up to 90% of the cancers associated with this virus.  Now administered regularly for over 15 years, we have seen a significant (81%) decrease in HPV related infections.  Precancerous cervical changes among vaccinated women have decreased by 40%.  This means less invasive procedures, biopsies and surgeries for our patients.

Who is the vaccine recommended for?

The vaccine is recommended for all everyone, ideally prior to sexual activity.   For this reason, it is recommended for children ages 11-12, as well as men and women through age 26.  It is less effective after the onset of sexual activity, as you may have already been exposed to HPV.  Recently, the HPV vaccine has been approved through age 45.  The CDC and ACOG both recommend that this be offered to men and women in this age group through “shared decision making with your doctor”.

We at Haugen OB/Gyn highly recommend this vaccine for cancer prevention and carry it at all locations.  Talk to your provider today about vaccination!

Should I exercise when I’m pregnant?

Answered by Dr. Sarah Schmitz-Burns.

We know regular exercise can benefit you and your fetus by preventing gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and cesarean birth.

If you are healthy and your pregnancy is normal, we recommend a goal of 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity physical activity. Moderate intensity means you are moving aerobically enough to raise your heart rate and start sweating. You can talk but you cannot sing. Some examples are brisk walking, riding a stationary bike, and swimming.

If you were very active prior to being pregnant, you can continue the same workouts with your Ob/gyn’s approval.

You should avoid contact sports where you could get hit in the abdomen, and activities where you are at risk of falling.

Welcome to Dr. Rebecka Bogue Docken to Haugen OB/GYN! Read below to learn more about her:

I was initially drawn to the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology because of the diversity of this field, it combines continuity of care, preventative care, and surgical expertise. I have found that the ability to care for multiple generations and to share in their intimate moments with my patients and their families is humbling. I enjoy the long-lasting relationships that are built with patients, from their first gynecological visit, during their pregnancy and then caring for them during menopause. My special interests include contraception, endometriosis, pregnancy care, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

I completed medical school in my home state of South Dakota and residency near Chicago, IL. During medical school I developed an international elective in Ghana, Africa and traveled there to bring medical care to underserved women. That experience solidified my desire to continue to advocate for women’s health and I am honored to serve this year as our districts ACOG Vice Chair.

My husband and I purchased our first home in Minneapolis and are excited to explore the many running and biking trails along the lakes. We moved my grand-mothers piano from South Dakota and I’m excited to get back to playing music. Our 7- year- old husky is overjoyed to finally have her very own backyard and she has been chasing rabbits since we arrived. We look forward to making Minneapolis our home.
