Essure
Learn about an exciting method of permanent birth control that does not require any incisions, is hormone-free, and can be performed under local anesthetic. The Essure procedure places soft, micro-inserts into the fallopian tubes through a scope that is passed through the cervix, into the uterus under video visualization. The microinserts create a tissue barrier (like scar tissue) that blocks the fallopian tubes and prevents the sperm from meeting an egg to prevent pregnancy. On average, it takes 35 minutes to place the micro-inserts and most women are able to leave within an hour of the procedure. Three months later, a confirmation test is performed to assure that the fallopian tubes are completely blocked. Essure is FDA approved and 99.8% effective as a contraceptive. Endometrial Ablation
Many women suffer from heavy periods, also called menorrhagia. These periods may last longer than 7 days, cause fatigue and anemia, soak through tampons or clothing frequently, and interfere with a woman’s daily activities. Endometrial ablation is a short, outpatient procedure that destroys the lining of the uterus which results in either lighter periods or even no menstrual flow for a period of time. This procedure is only provided for women who are done having children. It is not a form of birth control.
